From the desk of the Squadron Secretary:
Hello
all. I hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable summer of boating. Now the
leaves are gone, the nights are getting cooler and snow is in the air, it’s
time to think of more land-based activities.
As you know, your local CPS-ECP Squadron has made appeals in the past
for your help. We have asked you to consider joining our Bridge - the time
commitment is minimal (generally one evening per month and occasional
participation in special events) and you’d have the satisfaction of knowing
that you are helping to promote safe boating throughout the year. However, I
understand that you have many other commitments and find it difficult to spare
the time. I would ask for your help in one regard though. Inside this edition
of your newsletter, you will find a short survey that I would like you to take
a few minutes to complete and return to us. We need to know what you want from
us so that we can provide it. Is there some way we can make this newsletter
more appealing to you? How can the squadron make itself more visible to you?
Help us to help you – remember, we are YOUR Squadron.
Tania Burrows

Commander’s Comments
10'clock at night. I had supper. Followed by my
40-minute evening walk. The doctor told me this summer that, at 43 years old, I
should lose weight - a lot of it, or else...!
Got the message! You know, I still have the 14- foot square stern Scott
canoe I bought with my first job back in that summer, after my grade 12, when I
worked for INCO in the Garson mine near Sudbury. Oh well! At 278 pounds forget about it! I have not
touched the thing in the passed long while. It is collecting dust and bugs in
the garage beside our “big” 17-foot fibreglass restored 1962 Travellers Boat.
One day the canoe also will be restored and I will finally be able to relive
the memories of years gone by.
Now, back to my
article. What do I write about? Do I
make our readers laugh with the one bass and four perch I caught this
summer? No! No good! That story was stolen underneath my boat by
the very prolific and “energised” flocks of Cormorants feeding around our great
lakes!
How about making a
pitch to have more members on our bridge? Cute!
But I used the subject three times before!
Come on! What do Commanders write about on the second
year in office!? Lets dig a little bit here!
Ok! Here goes! Last year it was my first year as the
Commander of the Sault Sail and Power Squadron.
I was totally engrossed by my position. Every thing I touched,
everything I did was: “ Wow! This is top cool!”
I was bringing new ideas, new energy to this adopted organisation of
mine.
This year I am
still totally enthusiastic about the aims and goals of the CPS organisation as
a whole. I will be all my life! But I am getting to the: “Totally cool! I
still have the magic touch! Lets go hombre! But, boy! Did I blow that one bad!” phase. You know,
when your charisma seems to go the way of the waves. But towards the open sea
instead of the shore where your people are.
“Am I still liked?” “Why am I
sticking around?”
Because you are an
eternal believer in the values and the cause you first adopted some years back!
Wake up “dude”!!
Volunteering is
like life and your body. It gets weak
and frail after a while. Organisations need a constant flow of new members to
replace the old and tired ones. To give veteran members a chance to rest and
refresh before they come back to the board taking on new responsibilities.
Last year, we
where able to recruit only one of those new members on the bridge of your local
squadron. That is not enough!
Please give us a
hand. Get in contact with the bridge. Talk to one of its members. Contribute to
the promotion of safe boating and education. Come aboard!

you have not received e-mail from the Squadron lately that means we do not have
your e-mail address. E-mail is a quick
and efficient method to keep in touch with our members. We can keep you up to date with any changes
to boating regulations and notified of any scheduled activities.
If

Lynn Burzese, Membership Officer

We appeal to our
Membership…
We, on the executive known as the “Bridge”, encourage our members to
talk to a friend or family member, or anyone in the boating community, about
the benefits of taking the Basic Boating Course.
Two deadlines have come and gone regarding the Pleasure Craft
Operator’s Card (PCOC) requirements. The next one will dictate that every powerboat owner must comply – regardless of
age, boat or motor size. The licence is the law, and is out of our control.
Our mandate is safety through knowledge provided through our various
courses. Taking the Basic Boating Course enables boaters to go beyond the
general requirement. As a result, they are better equipped to handle waterways
– whether it be on an inland lake or on the St. Mary’s river, or any other
waterway for that matter. More people with the experience of this course means
greater safety for YOU and your loved ones.
The Pleasure Craft Operator’s Licence gets you off the dock. Let our
Basic Boating Course help you get back – safely!
