Canadian Power Squadrons
A Brief History - The Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons was incorporated on October 27, 1947. - Recognising its broadening membership identity, growth and market trends, in 1985 the corporation changed its name to Canadian Power & Sail Squadrons (“CPS”) and added, in the French language, Les Escadrilles canadiennes de plaisance (“ECP”). - In Sault Ste. Marie, on June 8 1964, after successfully completing the boating coures, 12 dedicated people banded together to form the Sault Ste. Marie Power Squadron, Voyageur District. It will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2004. Objectives The objectives of CPS are: - to perpetuate a fraternity of boaters of sufficient numbers, strength and vigour to achieve our ongoing aims of establishing high standards of navigation and seamanship; - to provide training and study courses and facilities in the field of Boating, Seamanship, Piloting, Navigation; - to promote the safe handling of boats of all kinds; - to cooperate with the agencies of Canada charged with the enforcement of Laws and Regulations relating to navigation. CPS is: - A national organization extending from coast to coast; - An organization of boating enthusiasts banded together to increase their knowledge of seamanship and navigation; - A charitable organization; - A recreational boating organization – all of the administration work and teaching of which is done by its Members without remuneration. - Interested in teaching many phases of seamanship, boat handling and navigation. - The corporation is structured as a group of local Squadrons formed into District, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, wherever pleasure boating is popular. *Sources - Sault Ste.
